Characterful
Kommetjie: |
The beach has got to be the primary focus at this wonderful,
sleepy seaside village. Spend days lapping up the sunshine
on comfortable Kommetjie beach whilst watching the surfers,
kite-surfers and body-boarders, building sand castles and
dipping in and out of the sea. Or, better still, surf or
body-board these world famous waves yourself. Or, take endless
magnificent wilderness beach walks along wild and deserted
Longbeach, taking in the wreck of the Kakapo, c. 1900, on
the way. Or again, go to Imhoffs Gift Farm, check out the
camels, then ride their horses in the breakers along the
beach.
Kommetjie is a typical, magical West Coast holiday village.
Quaint and characterful, it was laid out a century ago amongst
the coastal milkwoods surrounding Die Kom (a large protected
natural rocky sea basin). Today the village has extended
northwards towards magnificent Longbeach and the wreck of
the Kakapo. You can watch the fishing boats come and go at
Die Kom, take a walk to picturesque Slangkop lighthouse or
visit the crayfish factory beyond.
There are several excellent restaurants in Kommetjie - Bistro
Incognito, Rioja and Kommetjie Grill, to name but three -
and don’t forget Cobbs at Scarborough and Mnandi’s
at Solole Game Reserve, just slightly further afield. And
if you feel more like roughing it in a real spit n’ sawdust
pub atmosphere, you can down a pint whilst scoffing scrumptious
seafood at the Fisherman’s. And stock up with all you
need at Kommetjie Superette before going kayaking, scuba
diving, deep sea fishing, hiking, or just down to the beach.
Serious shopping, at Longbeach Mall, is just 10 minutes down
the road and includes Woollies, Pick n’ Pay, movies,
and internet café, whilst Clovelly Golf Club, Cape
Point Nature Reserve, Constantia Wine Route and numerous
characterful and delicious Kalk Bay and Simonstown restaurants
are all about 20 mins away. Slightly further, there’s
Constantia Village and Cavendish Square. And then, of course,
there’s world famous Cape Town Waterfront.
Are you a hiker? Then try this - walk Longbeach from Kommetjie
all the way to Noordhoek and visit Skebengas Pub at the Red
Herring, famous for it’s mouth-watering pizzas! (And
then of course, walk back!!) In the right season,
you’ll see whales and dolphins and if you walk it very
early in the morning and you’re very lucky, you might
even see a Cape Clawless Otter swimming in the inter-tidal
zone. But if this is a bit strenuous, go to Imhoff Farm,
just up the road, and have a hearty farm meal. Then take
a horse ride through the Cape fynbos countryside to the surf
and spend the afternoon riding the breakers all along the
beach.
Birders on the beach will enjoy sightings of the endangered
African Black Oystercatcher, Cape, Crowned and White Breasted
Cormorant, Sacred, Hadeda and Glossy Ibis, Pied Kingfisher,
Little Egret, Grey Heron, Whitefronted, Crowned and Blacksmith
Plover, Common, Caspian and Artic Tern, Kelp and Hartlaub’s
Gull, Pied Crow, White Necked Raven, African Yellow-billed
Duck, Black Winged Stilt, Cape Wagtail, Spotted Prinea, Cape
Francolin, Cape Canary and, if you’re lucky Spoonbill
Stork. Around and about the lodge you’ll see Cape White-eye,
cape Robin, Cape Bulbul, Redwinged Starling, European Starling,
Black Shouldered Kite, Crested Guineafowl, Rock Pigeon, Cape
Turtle Dove, Red Eyed Dove, Malachite and Lesser Double Collared
Sunbird, Fiscal Shrike, Southern Boubou, Fairy Flycatcher,
Cape Weaver and hear the distinctive cry of the African Fish
Eagle.
