| A non-profit
organisation, Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Africa
(BBBSSA) provides a mentoring programme for youth in need
or at risk. BBBSSA targets youth-in need and operates in
conjunction with organizations such as Schools, Children’s
Homes, Diversion/Community programmes and HIV/AIDS programmes.
Postive role-models are trained and matched with youth
to provide guidance, care and support and to assist them
in maximising their potential. By spending an hour a week
with a youth (Little) for an entire year, adult volunteers
(Bigs) provide positive role modelling and life experiences
that help build personal values such as self-esteem, self
respect and respect for others. Whilst the relationship
may only last a year, the effects typically last a lifetime.
The programme exists nationally in Cape Town, Gauteng,
KZN and PMB. |
