Starting
at Constantia Nek, your destination is to round the Woodhead
and Hely Hutchinson Dams. Upon exiting the forest you will
look up at the steepest section of your hike as it winds its
way up the mountain. Near the top take a refreshing drink
of water from the cool stream running underneath the small
bridge. If the stream is not running there is a drinking fountain
15 minutes further. Be sure to look out for the Red Disas
in season and on a clear day the scenic views are spectacular
and great for photographs. When you reach the Woodhead and
Hely Hutchinson Dams consider a picnic lunch or just relax
and take in this peaceful, tranquil setting. These Dams were
built over 100 years ago and there is a very interesting museum
to visit on the far side of the Woodhead Dam.

Walk Duration: 3-4 hours (Add on for stops)
Type of Terrain: Gravel
and cement road for the majority of the way. If
you choose to take shortcuts you walk on single
track and stairs for a part of the way.
Difficulty: This
is an easy walk. The road is very steep as you approach
the top of the climb but you will soon recover on
the flatter mountain top.

Route Description:
• The start of the walk begins on the forestry road
above Constantia Nek.
• You have two options at the beginning:
A: The steep stairs to the left which cross the road
once and continue upwards, ending up on the last stretch of the climb.
Or
B: Stick to
the gentler road that winds its way up the mountain. The road will
fork a couple of times so always choose the fork that heads upwards.
Be sure not to miss the second fork which veers sharply up and to
your left approximately 10 minutes into the walk.
• As
you wind your way up you take a breather and admire the super views
of False Bay and the suburbs below.
• At the top continue
along the road past the smaller De Villiers Dam on your left and the
Alexander and Victoria Dams on your right.
• Your destination
is to round the larger Woodhead and Hely Hutchinson Dams.
•
Follow the road around the Dams and walk along the path of each Dam
wall. You will have to climb a very short ladder to walk across the
upper, Hely Hutchinson, Dam wall.
• Continue along the road
around the Woodhead Dam until you come to the end of the road. There
is a small path on the left hand side that cuts back towards the Dam.
The path can be found opposite the small tap on the right hand side.
• Cross back along the Woodhead Dam wall and return along the
same path as you came up. |
