Starting
at Newlands Forest Station you walk towards the mountain and
take the path to the right where the road forks. The walk
is in the shade most of the time due to the large growth of
pine trees. This is great when the weather is hot on a typical
Cape Town Summer’s day. During the walk there are some
great views overlooking Newlands and later some of Bishops
Court. You should cross two streams during this walk which
are ideal places for a refreshment break or even a picnic.
With the mountain as a backdrop and the scenic views all around,
there are some great opportunities for photographs. There
are many interlinking paths and if you ever did wonder off
track then walk, keeping the mountain behind you, and you
should reach a path back to the main road.

Route Description:
• The start of the walk begins at Newlands Forest Station.
• Where the road forks to the left and right, go right
• Walk past the helicopter landing pads and wherever the road
forks, keep to the left.
• You will reach a lookout point which has a magnificent view
of the southern suburbs.
• Now facing the mountain, take the road to the left, the road
just above the one from which you have come.
• Follow that road and you will cross a bridge with a stream
and also the “woodcutters trail”
• Keep taking the left hand paths, but traveling in a fairly
straight line and you will reach another river (sometimes a stream).
• You should see a old ruin of a buiding (probably a pump house),
cross the stream just after it.
• There is a little bit of a climb to reach the path again on
the otherside of the stream. Once you reach the path go left, down
away from the mountain.
• Follow the winding path keeping in mind that you need to head
to your left back to the starting point.
• Take all the declining paths, otherwise you will be heading
back into the mountain.
• It’s a relatively straight walk now crossing bridges
again at the 2 streams on the way back.
• End again at Newlands Forest Station. |
