Cape Trout Fishing
Africa isn’t the sort of place that most people seek trout fishing opportunities, it isn’t what one expects but the reality is somewhat different for those in the know. Excellent fly fishing opportunities for these elusive salmonids can be had in various parts of the country and none better than the crystal clear and well managed waters of the Limietberg reserve approximately an hour from Cape Town.
Trout are not indigenous to Africa with the exception of the Atlas Mountains, but in the cooler waters at high altitude, where summer water temperatures allow these introduced fish have thrived. Today the streams of the Limietberg offer world class angling on naturally self stocking, Catch and Release only waters, with a fishing season lasting from September to May inclusive.
These waters are managed by Cape Nature Conservation in conjunction with the Cape Piscatorial Society. Permits for both the reserve and for the angling are required and a unique arrangement exists where angling pressure is limited by the requirement of booking specific beats (sections of river) in advance for the day. Permits of one kind or another are required for all the various venues.
The majority of waters hold rainbow trout although there are some venues that hold brown trout instead. The waters are often remote and visitors are recommended to make use of a guide, at least for their initial forays. After years of dedicated Catch and Release angling controls many of the waters hold very good numbers of highly educated fish that will challenge the skills of even avid anglers. The techniques required and location of the waters and specific beats are best discovered with some professional help to start with.
Outside of the river season there are also venues suitable for stillwater angling for trout, including both commercial “put and take” fisheries as well as some excellent larger stillwaters that are again managed by the Cape Piscatorial Society. In general the rivers fish better in the summer months and the dams during winter, providing some form of fly fishing action in any season.
If you are a trout angler, a visit to the Cape without experiencing the superb angling opportunities on offer at least for a day would be a mistake.
